Cash Flow Statement

The cash flow statement reconciles profit to cash: it starts from net income and shows where money actually went, split into operating, investing and financing activities. It answers the question the P&L can't: "we made $30,000 last month, so why is the bank account down?" For inventory businesses the answer usually lives in the operating section, where cash sinks into stock and reserves long before sales convert it back.

Profitable-but-broke is the defining ecommerce condition, and this statement is where it becomes legible. A brand earns $35,000 in a month; the cash flow statement shows $60,000 went into new inventory, $8,000 got trapped in a rolling reserve, and a $10,000 loan payment went out. Net cash: down $43,000 in a profitable month. Nothing is wrong, but an owner who can't see that decomposition either panics or, worse, keeps spending as if profit were cash.

Sophisticated readers use it as a lie detector too: the quality of earnings ratio compares operating cash flow to net income, and persistent gaps flag aggressive accounting. Producing a real cash flow statement monthly requires a reconciled balance sheet, which is why deposit-based books can't generate one. It ships as part of the standard statement package in monthly bookkeeping.
